Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea District Woman MP Anita Annet Among has expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for granting her what she described as "mercy" and ordering her release from about three months of house arrest.

Among thanks Museveni for 'mercy'
Among, in a statement following her release, thanked God for what she described as the "gift of life and freedom" and praised President Museveni for his decision to end the restrictions that had been imposed on her since May.
"I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Kaguta Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy," Among said.

Praise for Gen. Muhoozi
She also extended her appreciation to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who announced President Museveni's decision to have her released.
"I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his professionalism throughout this period," she said.

Among said she was looking forward to returning to her political responsibilities as the Woman MP for Bukedea and continuing to support the ruling National Resistance Movement leadership.
"As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership," she said.

Muhoozi announces release
Her statement came a day after Gen. Muhoozi announced that President Museveni had instructed him to release Among from house arrest and that she would not be prosecuted over the allegations that had surrounded her.
"Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well," Gen. Muhoozi said in a post on X.

In another post, Muhoozi said the President had decided to forgive Among despite acknowledging that she had made mistakes, effectively bringing an end to months of uncertainty over her political and legal future.

Why Among was placed under house arrest
Among was placed under house arrest in mid-May 2026 after security agencies raided her residences as part of investigations ordered by the President into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, money laundering and abuse of office linked to her tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
She remained under house arrest pending the completion of the investigations.
The security operation began on May 16, when heavily armed security personnel raided her Nakasero residence in Kampala. Security was subsequently maintained around her homes, restricting her movements and controlling access to the residences.
Reports later indicated that searches were conducted at properties associated with her in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda, Bukedea and other locations.

Investigations into alleged financial crimes
Investigators were looking into allegations concerning the accumulation of illicit wealth, corruption, money laundering and abuse of office.
The investigations also extended to several senior Parliament officials, some of whom were arrested and charged over alleged corruption and financial crimes connected to parliamentary funds.
The house arrest lasted for roughly three months. By June, security personnel were maintaining a full-time presence at Among's Nakasero residence, with visitors subjected to screening and access restricted.

Teso MPs appeal to Museveni

The restrictions also triggered political intervention from MPs from the Teso sub-region, who appealed to President Museveni to forgive Among and allow her to seek specialised medical treatment.
The legislators said they were concerned about her health while she remained under house arrest.

Among returns to political work
The decision to release Among marks a dramatic turn in the fortunes of the former Speaker, who had faced months of investigations and uncertainty after leaving the leadership of Parliament.
President Museveni's reported decision means Among will now return to her role as Bukedea Woman MP, where she says she intends to continue serving her constituents and supporting the NRM leadership.
Her release also brings to a close a three-month period in which one of Uganda's most powerful political figures was placed under tight security restrictions while investigators pursued allegations against her.
