The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the country's football governing body, has mourned the untimely death of David Owori, the 27-year-old captain of Uganda Premier League record champions SC Villa.
Owori, who also featured for the Uganda Cranes, was attacked by an unknown gang on Tuesday evening as he travelled to his home in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

According to reports, the attackers beat him and robbed him of his belongings, including mobile phones. He was rushed to Case Hospital in Kampala, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori "was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home" in Makindye.

In an official statement, FUFA president Hon. Eng. Moses Magogo mourned the death of the former Cranes player and described him as a leader and an inspiration to a generation.

"David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation. As captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility and passion. In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation," part of the statement read.

Magogo added: "On behalf of the FUFA Executive Committee, Delegates, Members, Secretariat Staff and the entire football fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to SC Villa, his family, teammates, coaches and all Ugandans on the loss of Owori."
"We have lost a son, a leader and a star. His light on and off the pitch will never be forgotten. We pray that the Almighty grants Owori David eternal rest and gives his family and SC Villa the strength to bear this great loss during these trying times."

He also played for Uganda's SC Vipers and had professional football stints with Vélez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden.
