As I write this, my heart is heavy with grief and concern for my community. The Eastern region of Uganda, where I come from, is facing an unprecedented climate crisis. The heavy rains that have been pounding our region have caused devastating floods and landslides, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair.
The most recent tragedy to strike our community is the loss of Nafuna Phiona's entire family due to a landslide that swept away their home in Bulambuli. This is not an isolated incident. Many families have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods because of the harsh climate impacts that our region continues to endure.
For too long, our region has suffered from neglect, with inadequate disaster preparedness and limited support for its people. As young people and natives of this region, we are compelled to ask: Who do we turn to for safety and support when our lives are threatened by climate-related disasters?
The answer is clear: we must take matters into our own hands. We must demand climate justice and hold our leaders accountable for their failure to protect our communities. We must also work together to build resilience and adapt to the changing climate.
As the founder and team lead of the Creation Care Foundation, I am committed to empowering climate activists, youth, women, and girls to take action against climate change. Our organization works tirelessly to promote gender equality, advocate for human rights, and support communities affected by climate-related disasters.
However, we cannot do it alone. We need the support of our leaders, policymakers, and the international community. We need climate justice—and we need it now.
To my fellow young people and natives of the Eastern region, I urge you to join me in this fight. Let us rise together and demand climate justice for our communities. Let us collaborate to build a safer, more resilient future for ourselves and for generations to come.
We owe it to ourselves, our communities, and the future of our planet.
