Fort Portal Central MP Alex Ruhunda has called on the government to regulate the increasing number of Ugandan women leaving for jobs in the Middle East, citing social challenges arising from the exodus.

Speaking during Parliament's Budget Committee discussion on the 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper for the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Ruhunda expressed concern over the impact on Ugandan society, particularly in the Buganda region.

“There is a growing concern about the exodus of our girls, especially here in Buganda, to the Middle East. Young men are struggling to find wives because the majority of women are leaving,” Ruhunda said.

He questioned whether the current labor export system prioritizes demand over the country's social stability, adding, “Should we allow our country to be emptied and left with social problems, or should there be a mechanism to regulate this traffic?”

The debate highlights the broader implications of labor migration on Uganda’s demographics and social structure, sparking calls for a balanced approach to addressing economic opportunities abroad and maintaining societal cohesion.
