Kanungu District marked a historic milestone with the launch of its first-ever High Court session on September 4, 2024, at the Chief Magistrate's Court. The session, which began at 11:00 a.m., was officially inaugurated by the Principal Judge, His Lordship Justice Zeija Flavian, and presided over by Resident Judge, His Lordship Justice Chemtai.

The launch was a significant event for the district, drawing a range of dignitaries, including the LC V Chairperson, Resident District Commissioner (RDC), District Internal Security Officer (DISO), District Police Commander (DPC), and various judicial officers from Rukungiri High Court. Prisons officers, representatives from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DDP), and the Chief Magistrate of Rukungiri were also in attendance.

This first criminal court session in Kanungu will address a backlog of cases, with a focus on serious criminal offenses such as aggravated robbery, aggravated defilement, aggravated trafficking in persons, murder, rape, and manslaughter. A total of 49 prisoners are scheduled to appear before the court, comprising 48 men and one woman. All cases set to be heard originated within Kanungu District.

In his address to the gathered community and officials, Principal Judge Justice Zeija acknowledged the concerns of local leaders and emphasized the importance of bringing justice closer to the people. He announced that such court sessions would now be held at least twice a year in Kanungu. This initiative aims to restore public trust in the justice system and alleviate the financial and logistical burdens on residents who previously had to travel long distances to attend court proceedings.

The local community praised the judiciary for making legal services more accessible and expressed their commitment to participating actively in the justice process by testifying in court. This, they believe, will ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and justice is served.

The session represents a significant step forward in the administration of justice in Kanungu District, bringing hope to many who have waited for their cases to be heard.
