MOROGORO, Tanzania

Uganda’s teams that will represent the country at this year’s edition of the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Tanzania have started arriving in the host city of Morogoro.

However, many others are still on their way. Some are currently at the Uganda-Kenya border in Busia, while others are midway through their journey at the Kenya-Tanzania border in Namanga.

Some of the Ugandan teams had their travel to Tanzania delayed by two days because the school bus drivers of the affected teams did not have the required clearance in accordance with Ministry of Education and Sports requirements.

The journey from Kampala to Morogoro covers an estimated 1,670 kilometres and takes at least 30 hours by road. However, the first teams to comply with the travel requirements started arriving in the host city on Tuesday morning.

The first teams to arrive in Morogoro included Bukedea Comprehensive School, Kibuli Secondary School, Makerere College School, Amus College School, Namugogo Vocational and Secondary School, Rubaga Girls, Mbogo High School, Mbarara High School, Kigezi High School, St Mary’s Kitende and Mukono Kings High School.

“The final group, the girls’ athletics team and officials, left Kampala this afternoon for Morogoro, Tanzania, and I was with the Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports, Dr Duncan Mugunya, to ensure all buses met student travel SOPs. At the Uganda-Kenya border, Gilbert Orikiriza and the USSSA CEO will take over escort duties,” USSSA President Justus Mugisha said.

“About 40% of Team Uganda is already in Morogoro. We appreciate the Ministries of Education and Sports, Transport, and Internal Affairs, and especially Uganda Traffic Police, for turning challenges into lessons on keeping student-athletes safe,” Mugisha added.

The FEASSA Games, which attract teams from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan, will start on Thursday, August 13, and run until August 22.
