LIRA
The former Lira District Land Board member, Ameny Thomas Max, has been charged with fraudulent procurement of a certificate of title and forgery in connection with alleged attempts to acquire government land.
Ameny was arraigned on Monday at the Grade One Magistrates Court in Lira by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
He was remanded in custody until 13 August 2026.
Prosecution alleges that between 2019 and 2020 in Lira District, Ameny and other suspects still at large acted with intent to defraud by abusing his position as a member of the District Land Board and former district speaker.
According to the prosecution, Ameny allegedly forged a land application form seeking conversion of land from customary tenure to freehold tenure.
He is further accused of making false statements in the application, claiming that his wife, Edwe Dorcus Rita, was the customary owner of part of government land located at Ireda Estate in Lira.
The prosecution alleges that Ameny subsequently caused Edwe to be registered as the proprietor of a freehold certificate of title for Plot 2, Abosolom Oteng Road, Ireda Estate, Lira.
The Anti-Corruption Unit said the case is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute alleged fraud involving public land.
Ameny remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
