Flying Squad operatives have arrested a born-again street preacher, Pastor Paul Ssemakula, in connection with the theft of a bag containing a loaded pistol. The incident occurred last week near Acacia Mall in Kampala. The stolen bag reportedly belonged to the son of a UPDF general.
The general’s son, alarmed by the theft, immediately contacted security operatives from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and the Flying Squad. Using CCTV footage, authorities identified Ssemakula as the thief. Further investigations revealed he is a serial robber who resides in Suzaana Zone, Nankulabye.
After several days of surveillance, Ssemakula was apprehended at a shrine in Wakiso, where he had sought the help of a witch doctor. He reportedly wanted to use charms to evade capture. The witch doctor, however, claimed he was unaware that Ssemakula had stolen a bag containing a pistol.
During interrogation at CMI, Ssemakula admitted to stealing the bag but claimed he was only after a phone and laptop, unaware of the firearm inside. He also confessed to handing the pistol over to an unknown bodaboda rider, complicating the search for the weapon.
Ssemakula further confessed to being involved in thefts at several locations in Kampala, including DFCU Bank, the Post Office, and areas in Ntinda, where he often preached the gospel of Jesus.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to recover the stolen firearm and bring any accomplices to justice. Pastor Ssemakula remains in custody, and charges are expected to be filed soon.
