A firearm was recovered this morning in Lira City after a student from Faith Secondary School stumbled upon an SMG rifle (Serial No. UG PSO 56S 4100382 14317) with two rounds of ammunition hidden in a bush near the football pitch of Ireda Primary School in Ireda Lumumba Cell, Ireda East Ward, Lira City East.
Upon making the discovery at around 0800 hours, the student immediately alerted the Head Teacher, who swiftly notified security forces. The firearm was later handed over to the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 103 Battalion in Lira City for further investigation.

Major General Keith Katungi, the 5 Division Commander, commended the vigilance of the student and school authorities, praising their cooperation with security forces in maintaining peace in Northern Uganda.
“We appreciate the local population for their continued support in ensuring security. Reporting suspicious activity and abandoned arms is crucial in our efforts to maintain stability in the region,” Maj. Gen. Katungi stated.

The UPDF reassured the public of its commitment to protecting Ugandans and their property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any security concerns to authorities.
