The former Mukono District Speaker, Betty Hope Nakasi, has been remanded to prison after being arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of corruption.

Nakasi appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday after being arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
She was remanded until October 21, 2026, when she is expected to return to court.

According to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Nakasi is alleged to have solicited Shs2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District on June 30, 2025, at the Mukono District Local Government headquarters.

The prosecution alleges that Nakasi, together with other people who are still at large, claimed she could use her influence over the Mukono District Service Commission to help the officer secure a promotion to the position of Senior Procurement Officer, Mukono District, in exchange for the money.

The arrest followed investigations by the Anti-Corruption Unit into allegations surrounding the illegal sale of government jobs in Mukono Local Government.

The investigations were reportedly triggered by complaints of extortion involving members of the District Service Commission and some politicians in the district.

The Anti-Corruption Unit said the case is part of ongoing efforts to combat the illegal sale of government jobs, in line with President Yoweri Museveni’s repeated warnings against the practice and his directive to authorities to take action against those involved.

Nakasi has not been convicted of the offence and remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
