Mbarara City Secondary School’s girls’ football team has etched its name in the history books after clinching its maiden Mbarara City secondary schools girls’ football title.
This marks not only their first City title but also their first-ever trophy at this level in the more than 10 years the school has been in existence.

Mbarara City celebrate with their title

Mbarara City defeated rivals Creamland 3–0 in a penalty shootout after the two sides played to a 1–1 draw in normal time.
Creamland had looked set to retain the title after taking a first-half lead through a penalty. However, Mbarara City equalized later in the second half, forcing the game into a penalty shootout.
With Creamland missing all their kicks, Mbarara City converted their chances to seal victory and celebrate their maiden title.

“We have been building this team for years, and we are happy that they have now reached this level of competition and determination. Our next target is to make the top six that will represent Ankole at the national championship,” said team head Paul Muhirwe.

Mbarara City will lead eight other teams—Creamland, Maryhill, St Mary’s, St Elizabeth, Mbarara Army, Kitagata, and St Anne’s—to represent Mbarara City at the USSSA Ankole Zone competitions scheduled to take place at Ibanda PTC from April 8–12.

Meanwhile, Mbarara Army Boarding School retained the boys’ title after defeating the fast-improving Ntare School 6–5 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in normal time.
It was Ntare School’s maiden appearance in the City finals and they came close to ending a 15-year wait for a district title, but luck was not on their side.

Ntare had earlier eliminated arch-rivals Mbarara High School 5–4 on penalties in the quarterfinals before defeating Nyamitanga SS 2–0 in the semifinals. On the other hand, Mbarara Army’s 5–4 penalty shootout victory over record winners Welden School in the semifinals highlighted their determination to retain the title.
The two finalists will now be joined by Welden School, Nyamitanga SS, Mbarara High School, Gracious SS, Global SS, and Mbarara SS as representatives of Mbarara City at the USSSA Ankole Zone boys’ football championship in Ibanda.
