Police in Bushenyi District have launched an investigation into the suspected suicide by hanging of Atwijukire Innocent, a 13-year-old Primary Five pupil at Rwatukwiire Primary School.
Apollo Tayebwa, the Acting Spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Region Police, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Atwijukire Innocent, a resident of Rweibaare Cell, Rwamabengwa Ward, Central Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.
According to reports, Atwijukire was found hanging from an avocado tree near his home in Rweibaare Cell on July 5, 2025. Preliminary police findings indicate that the pupil allegedly took his own life sometime between the night of July 4 and the morning of July 5, 2025. The incident reportedly followed a confrontation with his mother, who had gone to the school after suspecting him of stealing UGX 50,000 (fifty thousand Ugandan shillings). Witnesses said that upon seeing his mother at school, Atwijukire fled and went into hiding until his body was discovered hanging from the tree near his home.
Police investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death, and authorities have pledged to take appropriate action against anyone found culpable in connection with the incident. The scene was documented and managed by Bushenyi police officers, and the body was transported to Kampala International University (KIU) Teaching Hospital Mortuary in Ishaka for a post-mortem examination.
Tayebwa urged parents and teachers to use lawful and supportive methods when addressing children’s mistakes to avoid instilling excessive fear that could lead to such tragic outcomes.
