A prominent administrator at Uganda Christian University (UCU) was brutally killed in her home in the early hours of Wednesday, sparking shock and grief across the academic and local community.
Pamela Tumwebaze, approximately 46 years old and the Director of Student Affairs (commonly referred to as Dean of Students) at UCU, was allegedly strangled by an unknown assailant at her residence in Ganvu West Cell, Seeta Ward, Goma Division, Mukono District, around 2:00 a.m.
According to police details released today, Tumwebaze had returned home around 10:00 p.m. the previous evening with her two young sons, aged 10 and 13. The family was accompanied by their 20-year-old house help, Sharif Lwantale. After their arrival, Lwantale reportedly locked the gate and secured the house for the night.
Investigators believe the attacker may have gained entry opportunistically when the gate was opened for Tumwebaze's return. The suspect allegedly entered the home, strangled the university official, and then demanded the main door keys from the house help before fleeing the scene. The assailant escaped with a laptop bag containing unspecified items.
Tumwebaze, was rushed to Mukono Namirembe Hospital (also known as Namirembe Church of Uganda Hospital) but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have classified the incident as murder by strangulation under case reference Mukono CRB: 195/2026.
Uganda Police Force, through Mukono District authorities and Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed that specialized task teams have been deployed. Investigations are intensifying to identify, trace, and apprehend the suspect. No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear, though the theft of the laptop bag suggests a possible robbery element.
UCU issued a heartfelt statement expressing profound sorrow: "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Ms. Pamela Tumwebaze, the Director of Student Affairs and a member of the Uganda Christian University senior management. She went to be with the LORD in the early hours of Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Please uphold her children, immediate family, and loved ones in prayer."
The university described her as a beloved colleague, sister, and friend whose life was "brutally cut short." Rev. Prof. John Kitayimbwa, a senior cleric at UCU, lamented the loss, calling it a deeply saddening moment for the institution.
Tumwebaze was remembered for her compassionate mentorship of students and her active role in campus life, including delivering a keynote address at a recent community worship service at Nkoyoyo Hall.
The incident has left the UCU community in mourning, with calls for enhanced security measures in residential areas near the university. Police urged anyone with information to come forward as efforts continue to bring the perpetrator to justice. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
