Police in Rukungiri District have detained a 42-year-old village chairperson over the alleged defacing of campaign posters belonging to Rujumbura Constituency NRM flag bearer, Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu. The suspect, identified as Mr Darius Nabasa, the Local Council I chairperson of Omukibungo Village, Kanyamahwa Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, was arrested on January 11, 2026, and is being held at Rukungiri Police Station.
Police are still hunting for two other suspects allegedly involved in the same offence.
According to police, the incident occurred on January 7, 2026, at about 10:00pm at Half London Trading Centre, located in Omukibungo Village, Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
Earlier that day, between 5:30pm and 5:54pm, Hon. Muhwezi had conducted a campaign rally at the same trading centre, during which his campaign posters were pinned at various points around the area.
Police allege that shortly after the rally, suspects acting on the instructions of Mr Nabasa ordered people to remove and destroy the posters, claiming that the candidate should have first sought permission from the village chairperson before holding a rally in the area.
The posters were reportedly removed from areas near the home of one Mr Obed Aryayijuka.
The matter was reported to Rukungiri Police Station, prompting investigations.
Confirming the arrest, Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Mr Elly Maate said police had recorded statements from relevant witnesses, visited the crime scene, and recovered exhibits.
“Statements from witnesses were recorded, the crime scene was visited, and exhibits, including damaged campaign posters, were photographed and recovered. Inquiries are still ongoing, and efforts to arrest the remaining suspects are underway,” Maate said. Uganda is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on January 15, 2026.
