AGAGO — The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) has expressed regret over a tragic incident in which one of its soldiers, Private Bonny Amenoy, went on a shooting rampage, killing three civilians and injuring two others in Agago District.

The incident occurred at around midnight on October 20, 2024, in Ngora East village, Paimol Sub County, Agago North County. Preliminary reports suggest that Private Amenoy, aged 45, who hails from Ocini-Kamudini in Oyam District, had domestic issues with his wife, Angom Betty, who had fled from him. It is alleged that in his search for another man he suspected to be with his wife, he opened fire on innocent civilians.

The victims of the shooting include 21-year-old Apiyo Sunday, 47-year-old Akidi Santino, and 16-year-old Ajalo Florence. Their bodies have been taken to Dr. Ambrossoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo for post-mortem examination. The two injured survivors, identified as 47-year-old Kidega Charles Kumakech and 20-year-old Apiyo Janet, were also rushed to the same hospital for further treatment.

The UPDF has condemned the soldier’s actions and pledged to apprehend Private Amenoy, who remains at large, to face prosecution. A joint investigation by the UPDF and other security agencies is currently underway.

In a show of commitment to the victims, the UPDF has pledged to cover all burial expenses for the deceased and meet the medical costs of the injured.
