The Deputy Division Commander of the 5 Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Col. David Opeero, has issued a stern warning to young people, urging them to avoid engaging in criminal activities during the festive season.
Speaking during a regional security committee meeting at Achol Pii Barracks, Col. Opeero highlighted the importance of peace and responsibility, especially among the youth. He specifically cautioned groups, including the Agur group, against crimes such as robbery, rape, pickpocketing, and attacks on travellers.
“Christmas is a time we approach with joy, but it also comes with challenges. Let us all be responsible and avoid excessive drinking, which leads to road accidents and unnecessary fights,” Col. Opeero emphasized. He also urged communities to secure their cattle in designated or protected kraals to deter theft by cattle rustlers.

Regional authorities emphasize security measures
Adding to the call for vigilance, Regional Police Commander SSP Okae Ben Geoffrey stressed the need for collective responsibility in maintaining security during the festive period. He reminded the public that all fireworks displays must receive clearance from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and should only be conducted by trained professionals.
Lt. Hakim Viga, Acting Regional Internal Security Officer for Acholi, warned against the increasing circulation of counterfeit money, which has been targeting farmers, mobile money agents, and local businesses. “There are individuals posing as businessmen, moving around with fake money. People must be cautious,” Lt. Viga advised.

A unified approach for a safe festive season
The meeting, attended by members of the regional security committee, underscored the need for collaborative efforts to ensure peace and safety during the holidays. Authorities pledged to strengthen security measures to protect residents and prevent crime.
As the festive season approaches, the community is urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and contribute to a safe and joyous celebration.
