As Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Women's Day, Boni Consilii Girls Vocational School in Isingiro District also held celebrations in honour of women and mothers.
Speaking during a function held at the school premises, the school head teacher, Rev. Sr. Dr. Gladys Kachope, called on girl students to grow up respecting men even as society promotes women’s emancipation and equal rights.
“We ought to respect males even as women pursue emancipation and the protection of their rights. You have to grow up knowing that. It is not right to find women disrespecting men, or vice versa. It hurts to see someone marry today and the marriage collapses the next month because of disagreements caused by disrespect,” Kachope said.

She urged the students to uphold the morals taught at school so that they grow into respectful and focused citizens with integrity when they leave the school.
Quoting the Bible, Sr. Kachope said the dignity of women, which she said was affected in the book of Genesis where Eve is described as the first to sin, was later restored by God through Mary, mother of Jesus, who gave birth to Jesus Christ, the saviour of the world.

During her remarks, Sr. Kachope also praised Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda, for what she described as his efforts in promoting and uplifting women in a society where they had historically suffered cultural mistreatment.
At the same function, Gracemary Ampaire, a former student of the school who is now pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery Science at Lira University, encouraged the students to remain focused and work hard in their studies.

Besides celebrating International Women’s Day, the event also marked the inauguration and welcoming of Senior One students into the school, as well as a cultural gala in which students performed various items showcasing their cultural heritage.
