Mbarara City 0 – SC Villa 2
Mbarara City continued to slip closer to relegation after yet another home defeat in the Uganda Premier League on Wednesday. A 2-0 loss to a nine-man SC Villa side has left the Ankole Lions in serious trouble as they struggle to avoid dropping out of the top flight.
This marked their third consecutive defeat, following similar 2-0 losses to URA and Police. They have also failed to secure maximum points in their previous matches against Bright Stars, Kitara, and BUL—all of which ended in draws. This means Livingstone Mbabazi's side has managed just 3 points out of a possible 18 in their last six matches—an unacceptable run for any team fighting to stay in the league.
Mbarara City's lackluster form has dragged them into the relegation battle
With six tough fixtures remaining, the Ankole Lions will need a significantly improved performance. They must target at least three wins, starting with a challenging away match against fellow strugglers KCCA on Saturday.
The defeat to SC Villa on Wednesday further exposed many of Mbarara City's weaknesses, which will require urgent attention before they host title contenders NEC at Kakyeka Stadium on April 30. They will then travel to face relegation rivals Wakiso Giants on May 10. Mbarara City will follow that with two consecutive home games against league debutants Lugazi FC and Express FC on May 14 and 17 respectively, before ending the season with an away trip to Maroons on May 24.
The defeat on Wednesday leaves Mbarara City in 13th place with 23 points—just four points above 14th-placed Wakiso Giants (19). With Bright Stars in 15th on 16 points and Mbale Heroes anchoring the table with 10, Mbarara City and Wakiso Giants appear to be the main contenders in the battle to avoid relegation.
To secure safety, Mbarara City must win at least three of their remaining games.
