KAPCHORWA, Uganda
At least 21 people, including 20 pupils and one adult, have been confirmed dead following a tragic road crash involving a school bus in Kapchorwa District.
The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday evening at Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county, when an Isuzu bus (registration number UA 108BQ) belonging to King David Junior School in Ndejje, Makindye Division, Kampala, overturned while returning from an educational tour.
According to the Uganda Police Force, the bus had transported pupils to Sipi Falls for a study trip. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver, whose identity had not yet been established by press time, reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the return journey. The bus is said to have veered off the road, struck a large roadside stone, and overturned, resulting in one of the deadliest road crashes involving schoolchildren in recent years.
Police confirmed that 20 pupils and one adult male died in the crash, while three adult males and several juveniles sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to Kaserem Health Centre IV, Kapchorwa General Hospital, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kapchorwa Mortuary, where they await identification by relatives and postmortem examinations.
Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
"We wish to confirm that, following the fatal road traffic crash, a total of 21 people, comprising 20 pupils and one adult, have so far been confirmed dead. Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available," Kananura said.
The Uganda Police Force extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the management of King David Junior School, and everyone affected by the tragedy, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, particularly regarding school transport and travel to educational destinations, as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
