Police have arrested an additional suspect in connection with the killing of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, as investigations into the June 5, 2026, incident deepen.
The suspect, identified as Kabugo Henry, a 21-year-old boda boda rider and resident of Old Kira–Kisenyi, was arrested in Wandegeya, Kampala, during a coordinated operation involving police and boda boda leadership from Nakawa Division.
According to police spokesperson ASP Rachael Kawala, the arrest was made after investigators reviewed video footage from the scene of the incident. The footage allegedly shows Kabugo wearing a blue reflector jacket and concealing his identity with a black hood while in the vicinity of the attack.
Police say the video evidence, combined with intelligence gathered from informants and area surveillance, helped track the suspect's movements leading up to his arrest.
Investigators believe Kabugo was among individuals present at the scene during the fatal assault on Gongodyo. However, police emphasize that his exact role in the incident is still under investigation as efforts continue to establish the full sequence of events.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended without resistance after being located in the Wandegeya area following targeted surveillance operations.
Authorities have confirmed that more suspects are still being pursued, with detectives reviewing additional video recordings and witness statements to identify all individuals involved.
The killing of Gongodyo, a prominent rugby player, has triggered concern within Uganda's sports fraternity, with stakeholders calling for swift justice and improved security measures for athletes in public spaces.
Police say further updates will be communicated as investigations continue.
