UBTEB Executive Secretary, Mr. Onesmus Oyesigye, revealed that a total of 1,926 candidates sat for the examinations across 45 assessment centers

KAMPALA – The Uganda Business and Technical Examination Board (UBTEB) has today released the results of the July-August 2024 Diploma and Certificate examinations for Business, Technical, and Physical & Biological Sciences at a ceremony held at State House, Nakasero. The event was presided over by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni.

UBTEB Executive Secretary, Mr. Onesmus Oyesigye, revealed that a total of 1,926 candidates sat for the examinations across 45 assessment centers. Of these, 1,804 candidates (94%) were enrolled in diploma programs, while 122 (6%) pursued certificate programs. Notably, male candidates dominated the exams, representing 72% (1,393) of the total, while female candidates accounted for 28% (533).

A remarkable 82% of the candidates successfully completed their studies, with 285 (15%) achieving distinctions, 1,107 (57%) securing credits, and 170 (9%) passing. Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts, with an 84% completion rate compared to 80% for males. Female students excelled in traditionally male-dominated fields like Fashion and Garment Design, Mechanical Engineering, and Business Diplomas.

Special recognition was given to candidates with special needs. Out of nine special needs candidates, six successfully completed their programs. However, challenges were noted in the performance of some candidates, particularly in technical subjects such as Thermodynamics, Engineering Mathematics, and Computer-Aided Design.

The board emphasized the continued relevance of TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) qualifications in the job market, citing a recent study showing that over 82% of graduates from national diploma engineering programs were employed within one year of graduation.

UBTEB also highlighted its achievements, including the attainment of ISO certification, the digitalization of examination processes, and the adoption of real-life project guidelines as part of the assessment process. However, challenges such as the high cost of practical assessments, lack of placement opportunities for industrial training, and gaps in curricula for special needs students were raised.

In his remarks, UBTEB Board Chairperson, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, commended the government's investment in TVET and pledged to continue improving the quality of assessments to ensure that graduates are equipped with the necessary skills for the labor market. He also appealed for more government support in finalizing the construction of a modern assessment center and the development of a TVET qualifications framework.

The Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni, congratulated the graduates and urged them to contribute to Uganda's socio-economic development through innovation and entrepreneurship.
