Residents of Kigarama Sub-county in Sheema District are set to benefit from improved access to clean and safe water following the launch of a piped water extension project by the district local government.
The UGX 46,908,044 project will extend piped water from Nyabwina–Kyaburambo to Omukibati–Kiyungu, targeting communities that have endured chronic water shortages for years.
Local leaders say the intervention will significantly reduce the burden on households, especially for women and children, who have been forced to walk long distances in search of water, particularly during dry seasons.
Launching the project, the Sheema Resident District Commissioner, Jane Asiimwe Muhindo, issued a stern warning to the contractor, stressing that quality must not be compromised.
“This is not just another project; it is a lifeline for our people. We will not tolerate shoddy work. Every pipe laid must meet the highest standards because this system must serve our communities for many years,” she said.
The contractor, M/S Diakam Technologies, has assured district authorities and residents that the project will be delivered within the agreed timeframe, despite the high demand for reliable water sources in the area.
District Chairperson Jemmimah Tumwijukye Buhanda called for swift implementation, noting that water scarcity continues to undermine livelihoods and public health.
“Our people cannot wait any longer. Every day without water is a day of hardship, especially for women and children. We expect this work to move with speed so that communities can start benefiting immediately,” she said.
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Kebirungi Rose, said the district will enforce strict supervision to guarantee value for money.
“We are going to monitor this project closely from start to finish. Every shilling must translate into a functional, reliable water system that truly serves the people,” she said.
District Water Engineer Mutungi Edmond explained that the extension has been designed to improve coverage while addressing both current and future water needs.
“This is a long-term solution. The system has been carefully planned to eliminate persistent water stress in Kigarama and to support future demand as the population grows,” he said.
Residents who attended the launch welcomed the development, expressing optimism that it will mark the end of years of unreliable and unsafe water access.
The project is part of Sheema District's broader strategy to expand water infrastructure and move toward universal access to safe water in line with national development priorities.
Once completed, officials say the piped water extension will improve sanitation, boost public health, and support socio-economic transformation in Kigarama Sub-county.
