KAMPALA— Makerere University’s government-sponsored students have finally received their food and living-out allowances, initially scheduled for release in August and September. The funds, disbursed on Monday, November 11, 2024, fulfill the university’s commitment to support government-sponsored students, following delays that left many students struggling financially.
The delay sparked protests on campus last week, leading to the suspension of several student leaders. In response, the Minister of Students’ Social Affairs, Hon. Mutumba Robert, announced the cancellation of the Freshers’ Ball on November 9, to prevent further unrest.
Students expressed relief upon receiving the funds. Natasha Tracy, a first-year student, said she welcomed the payment but regretted that she would use much of it to settle debts accrued during the delay, including loans from fellow students to cover essential needs and accommodation fees in Kasubi, a nearby suburb.
While many students are pleased with the allowance, some remain frustrated, as there are reports that each student was shorted by UGX 20,000. In a message on the Makerere University Government Students Association (MUGOSA) WhatsApp group, a student asked, “When should we go to demand for the remaining UGX 20,000?”
Additionally, students who were suspended following last week’s protests have been encouraged by their peers to seek pardons from the university, given that they were advocating for timely payment and fair treatment for all government-sponsored students.
The release of allowances has come as a much-needed relief for students, with university officials promising to address financial concerns more promptly in the future to prevent similar disruptions.
