Dire Dawa
The national U17 men’s football team, the Uganda Cubs, maintained their perfect start in the TotalEnergies AFCON U17 CECAFA Region Qualifiers with an emphatic 9–0 demolition of Sudan in a Group B match played at Dire Dawa Stadium on Tuesday. Layrea Kingston’s boys showed no mercy to a disjointed Sudanese side, unleashing an electrifying second-half performance that produced six different scorers.
Unlike in their opening match against Burundi—where the team failed to add to their early lead—this time Kingston saw clear signs that his ball-playing philosophy is beginning to take shape.
In total, eight different players scored Uganda’s nine goals, perfectly illustrating Kingston’s approach: that goals need not be tied to personalities but to collective team effort.
Defender Eze Kombi scored one of the goals
As in the first game, team captain Owen Mukisa led by example, opening the scoring in the 10th minute and later doubling the lead. His brace took his personal tally to four goals in two matches. Mukisa’s double was joined by a solo effort from Thomas Ogema, sending Uganda into halftime with a commanding 3–0 lead.
Arnold Kayemba is joined by his colleagues to cverebrate his goal
At the restart, Kingston made immediate substitutions, withdrawing Lorrian Lwesibawa and Nicholas Kakooza for Abdulshakur Baba and Ashraf Kyakuwa.
The changes injected speed and sharp ball movement, and soon left-back Eze Kombi arrived in the danger area to fire home one of the most eye-catching goals of the evening.
Abdulshakur Baba came on in the second half and scored
Further changes saw Arnold Kayemba, Brian Olwa, and Travor Mubiru replace Mukisa, Ogema, and Shakur Ngobi. Kayemba, Olwa, and Baba all went on to get their names on the scoresheet.
Striker Ismail Fahad also ended his goal drought, scoring once and providing two assists, before central defender Enock Mwesigwa wrapped up the goal fest with a beautifully curved strike from outside the box.
The victory lifts Uganda to six points with 13 goals scored and none conceded. Their upcoming match against Tanzania on Friday will determine who tops Group B.
