The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Armoured Division Commander in Masaka, Major General Deus Sande, has died suddenly. According to the UPDF spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi, Maj Gen Sande passed away in the early hours of this morning at around 3:45am in Mpigi District.
“Tragedy has struck the UPDF family again, and with deep sorrow, we confirm the sudden passing of the UPDF Armoured Division Commander (Masaka), Major General Deus Sande, early this morning in Mpigi at around 0345 hours,” Col. Magezi said in a statement.
Col. Magezi explained that Maj Gen Sande was travelling to Kampala to attend the funeral service of a fellow senior officer, Major General Francis Takirwa, at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nakasero. He was the chairman organizing committee for the burial.
“He was on his way to Kampala to attend the funeral service of comrade Major General Francis Takirwa (RIP) at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nakasero.

Major General Takirwa died on Saturday, February 7, 2026,” Magezi said.
According to the statement, Maj Gen Sande developed breathing complications while en route to Kampala.
“Major General Deus Sande developed breathing complications along the way, and efforts to resuscitate him at a health facility in Mpigi failed,” he added.
“The exact cause of death will be ascertained later. We extend our condolences to his family, relatives, and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” Col. Magezi said.
