RACE FOR 2026: Generals turn guns on MP Ssekikubo

Ssekikubo vowed to defeat the generals in the 2026 polls, stating that they cannot even win an LC1 election seat in Lwemiyaga

LWEMIYAGA - Political battles in Lwemiyaga County have resumed ahead of the 2026 elections as two senior retired army generals have turned their focus on the incumbent MP, Theodore Ssekikubo.
The retired generals, Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rwanshande and Maj. Gen. Phinehas Manoni Katirima, who hail from Lwemiyaga, launched their campaign against Ssekikubo this week in support of former minister Joy Kabatsi, whom Ssekikubo defeated in the 2021 general elections.

In the 2021 elections, Ssekikubo garnered 8,527 votes, while Kabatsi polled 5,649. Edmond Bwire, an Independent candidate, received 4,196 votes, and the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Paul Zilidamu, garnered 348 votes.

Katirima addressed voters, declaring that Ssekikubo’s time as MP is over, accusing him of losing political relevance. “Let me tell you openly, Honourable Ssekikubo, enough is enough. You must go. Do not impose yourself on the people,” Katirima stated. He accused Ssekikubo of intimidating people with ammunition and assault, pledging to lead the campaign to end his tenure. “We loved you, Ssekikubo, when you came here as our child. You are now stinking before the electorate. What kind of stomach do you have? You have been eating from Parliament for decades. It is time for you to come back home,” he added.

Katirima told Ssekikubo to stop imposing himself on people and go away

Comparing Ssekikubo’s potential ousting to the fall of the Milton Obote regime, Katirima advised Ssekikubo to retire voluntarily. “The Dr. Milton Obote regime also went just like how Ssekikubo is going to be thrown out. He should be wise to retire before being forced out. Let him have some shame,” Katirima remarked.
Rwanshande added, “We have a criminal scenario where police sniffer dogs end up at the gate of Honourable Ssekikubo. Ssekikubo fuels conflict in our area. He has contributed to the instability of Lwemiyaga through criminality and land grabbing.”

In response, Ssekikubo vowed to defeat the generals in the 2026 polls, stating that they cannot even win an LC1 election seat in Lwemiyaga. “Some of that gang that is against me cannot even win an LC village election,” Ssekikubo asserted, expressing his readiness for a political showdown. Ssekikubo also addressed recent mobilization efforts against him led by Micheal Nuwagira, aka Toyota, in Lwemiyaga. “I am the NRM party incumbent MP. So, how can Toyota, a person I regard as a brother, join a plot against me? I was not invited to this meeting, imagine,” he said.

In a recent meeting chaired by Nuwagira at Ntusi Sub County headquarters in Lwemiyaga County, Ssekikubo was not allowed to respond to concerns raised against him, which included accusations of land grabbing, murder, and failing government programs. Despite pleading to be heard, the organizers declined to grant him an opportunity to speak.

Nuwagira later stated that he would organize another meeting where Ssekikubo would be given an audience. “I will support the cause to take action against the culprits if we find the complaints of land grabbing, murder, and others to be genuine. We need the truth to come out,” Nuwagira said.

“Injustices have no space in Uganda today. Lwemiyaga is part of Uganda. I have a reason why I need to have a clear report. We need to find out where the problem is. Is it from the government or landlords?” he added.
