The National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned the reported arrest and disappearance of its supporter, Ninye Tabz, in what the party describes as another case of "drone" operations targeting opposition activists.
Witnesses and party supporters claim that Ninye Tabz was taken on Wednesday by unidentified armed men travelling in an unmarked Toyota Hiace van in Kamwokya, Kampala.
The alleged operation has sparked renewed criticism from opposition leaders, who accuse security agencies of using unlawful tactics to intimidate government critics and politically active youth.
NUP officials said the incident reflects a worrying resurgence of the controversial "drone" arrests that were widely reported in the aftermath of Uganda's 2021 general elections.
The party demanded the immediate release of Ninye Tabz or that he be produced before a competent court, insisting that all arrests must be conducted in accordance with the procedures laid down in the Constitution.
Supporters of the opposition party also took to social media to express concern over what they described as an increasing number of reported disappearances and arrests involving NUP members in different parts of the country.
Human rights activists have repeatedly urged the authorities to end the use of unmarked vans in security operations, arguing that the practice creates fear and raises concerns about accountability and due process.
Security agencies have previously defended such operations, maintaining that arrests carried out in the course of investigations are lawful and necessary for national security.
As of Wednesday night, the whereabouts of Ninye Tabz remained unknown, with pressure mounting on the authorities to account for his reported detention.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Police and other security agencies were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
