LUWEERO, Uganda

Two employees of Luweero General Hospital have been arrested after they were accused of demanding Shs700,000 from relatives of a patient who had sought treatment at the facility.
The suspects, Rebecca Nakiwala, an orthopaedic officer, and Margaret Nabikolo, were arrested after the patient's family reported the alleged demand for money, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Police said the matter arose after a woman who had suffered a serious cut on her right leg was admitted to the hospital's emergency ward following a domestic violence incident. Investigators allege that the two health workers requested payment before treatment could proceed.

According to police, the family managed to raise Shs300,000, which was allegedly given to the suspects before officers intervened. The money was recovered and is expected to form part of the evidence in the case.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twineamazima confirmed that the suspects were arrested and that a case of extortion had been opened at Luweero Central Police Station.

The case has brought renewed attention to concerns over illegal charges in government health facilities, where patients and their attendants have previously complained of being asked for unofficial payments despite public healthcare services being funded by the government.

Health authorities have consistently warned medical workers against soliciting money from patients, saying such actions violate professional ethics and weaken public confidence in the health system.

Luweero General Hospital remains one of the major public health facilities serving communities in Luweero District and neighbouring areas, making accountability among staff critical to maintaining trust among patients.

Police said investigations are still ongoing and that the suspects will be presented before court after the inquiry is complete.
