MITOOMA

Former Bushenyi United FC player and football enthusiast Alex Karitundu has assured the sports fraternity in Mitooma District of improved investment in sports, especially football.
Karitundu, who is the NRM flag bearer for the Mitooma District LCV Chairperson seat, made the assurance while responding to concerns about the poor state of football grounds in the district as he presided over the Mwere Cup finals in Ijumo Parish.

While addressing sports issues in the area, tournament organiser Innocent Mwere Bamwesigye expressed concern over leaders’ neglect of recreational grounds, which has hindered sports development in Mitooma.
“Mitooma District can never host school games at the regional or national level because the playing facilities are in a poor state. Yet these games attract many people and generate income. Instead, we keep going to other places and enriching them because our leaders have neglected our sports facilities,” Bamwesigye said.

In response, Karitundu acknowledged the challenges and assured residents of improved attention to sports infrastructure. “The remaining sources of employment and income for the growing youth population worldwide are music and sports. I assure you that we are going to prioritise sports and sports facilities as part of our major development projects,” he said.

He added, “Currently, Mitooma District has no recognised football team, which is unfortunate. Such tournaments are vital for talent identification and selection. It is also disappointing that we do not have a district football pitch. However, we have already earmarked grounds at Rugabagaba, Kyangugwa and Ijumo, which we plan to upgrade to standard playing surfaces.”

Mitooma District, which was carved out of Bushenyi in 2011, previously hosted secondary school football competitions at the former Bushenyi sub-region level, but concerns were later raised over the poor condition of the pitches.

Participating teams

Kanjwiga Village Team won the championship after defeating Kirambi FC 2–1 in a tense final, earning their first title in five years, along with a trophy and a bull.

The Mwere end-of-year competition is the brainchild of sports enthusiast Innocent Bamwesigye Mwere, who initiated it to engage youth during the long December–January holiday, discourage involvement in risky leisure activities, and nurture sporting talent.
