Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr. Miria Matembe has been granted cash bail of Shs3 million in a case in which she is accused of making sectarian remarks.
Matembe, a prominent women's rights activist, had been remanded to Luzira Prison following her recent arrest and arraignment on charges of allegedly making statements capable of promoting hostility and ill will against members of the Banyankole community.
The charges have generated widespread public debate, with some of her supporters arguing that the prosecution is politically motivated because of her long-standing criticism of the government. Authorities, however, maintain that the matter is being handled in accordance with the law.
Appearing in court on Wednesday, Matembe remained calm as proceedings unfolded amid heightened public interest.
The magistrate granted her cash bail of Shs3 million pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Her sureties were also presented before the court and found to be substantial, paving the way for her release upon fulfilling the bail conditions.
Following the ruling, supporters inside the courtroom applauded, while others gathered outside welcomed the decision and expressed hope that the necessary paperwork would be completed promptly to facilitate her release.
Dr. Matembe is one of Uganda's most prominent female political figures. She served as Minister of Ethics and Integrity during the early years of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's administration before later becoming one of the government's outspoken critics, frequently speaking out on corruption, governance, constitutionalism, and democratic accountability.
Her latest legal battle has attracted significant national attention given her long-standing role in public life and advocacy for women's rights and good governance.
The case will return to court on a date to be fixed as investigations continue.
