IBANDA

Police in Ibanda District have retrieved the body of an unidentified minor who was allegedly murdered and dumped in a river. The incident was reported by a teenager who had gone to collect firewood on Friday evening near River Ekyambu when she saw a swarm of flies surrounding a strange object in Ruyonza Cell, Bufunda Ward, Ibanda Municipality.
Upon approaching the scene, she discovered a human hand near a body that had already started decomposing along the riverbank.

According to preliminary information from the Ibanda District Resident Commissioner, Mr Godfrey Mbetegyereize, the teenager rushed home to inform her parents about what she had seen.
“We received information from residents informing us about the incident involving an unknown body that was found dumped in the river, and the security team managed to reach the scene,” he said.

Mr Mbetegyereize explained that the retrieved body belonged to a female child believed to be between eight and nine years old and had not yet been identified by locals.
“The deceased is about eight to nine years old, and the body had already started decomposing. Locals have not been able to identify her, and no one has come forward to report a missing child in the area. We suspect that the body might have been dumped from Kazo since the river flows from there to Ibanda before pouring into River Mpanga in Kamwenge District. However, we are still investigating,” said Mr Mbetegyereize.

He added that the body was transferred to Ruhoko Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as authorities wait for relatives to come forward and claim it for burial.

Mr Lawrence Twebaze, a resident of Ruyonza Cell, Bufunda Ward in Ibanda Municipality, said no one in the area had reported a missing child and locals failed to recognise the body. “We do not know the child, and we have never heard of any parent reporting a missing child. No one has identified her, and the body had already started decomposing,” he said.
