A prominent businessman, Muhammad Ali, was today re-arraigned before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of forgery and uttering false documents in connection with a massive alleged gold scam.
The Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), brought Ali back to court this afternoon. He has been remanded until Friday, 31st July 2026.

According to court officials, the fresh charges stem from allegations that Ali used forged documents to secure bail while facing prosecution in the main case. The principal matter involves an alleged USD 3.5 million (approximately UGX 13 billion) fake gold scam that targeted investors based in Dubai.

Major Fraud Probe Continues
The SH-ACU says it has developed significant leads on other individuals suspected to be part of the conspiracy. Several suspects remain at large, and security agencies say manhunts are actively underway.
“All suspects will be arraigned before court upon their arrest,” authorities stated.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the large sums of money involved and the international dimension of the alleged scam. Dubai-based investors are reported to have been defrauded through what prosecutors describe as sophisticated document forgery and false representations involving gold transactions.

This latest development marks another chapter in Uganda’s ongoing crackdown on high-value economic crimes and corruption. The joint operation between SH-ACU, CID, and ODPP underscores increased inter-agency collaboration in tackling complex financial fraud cases.

Further details are expected to emerge when the case returns to court on July 31st.
