Ten people were confirmed dead and three others injured following a fatal road crash on today morning along the Busia Highway in Bugiri District.

The accident occurred at about 7:00 am at Busowa Town Council and involved a Toyota Hiace registration number UBN 817H and a stationary trailer UA 647BA/UA 430AA, police said in a statement issued by Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura.

According to preliminary findings, the driver of the Toyota Hiace attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle but was forced to swerve abruptly when another vehicle approached from the opposite direction. In the process of avoiding a head-on collision, the driver lost control and rammed into the parked trailer.

Police said the impact killed ten occupants of the Hiace, including the driver, on the spot. Three others were rescued with injuries.

A police response team rushed the survivors to hospital and transferred the bodies of the deceased to the mortuary as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced.

Kananura urged motorists to refrain from reckless behaviour on the road, noting that speeding and unsafe overtaking remain leading contributors to deadly accidents. He appealed to drivers to exercise maximum caution and prioritise safety at all times.
