Bishop Stuart University (BSU) marked a bright return to the Pepsi University Football League with a thrilling 2–1 come-from-behind victory against the International University of East Africa (IUEA) in a Group B clash played at Riverside Grounds, Kakoba, in Mbarara City. The two sides played out a goalless first half before Henry Komakech put the visitors ahead with a looping header off an impressive Carlos Kaddu throw-in. However, Kaddu — a member of Uganda’s 2019 CECAFA U15 winning team — was later forced off after sustaining an injury.
BSU team cerebrate their win
In response, BSU head coach Ruben Faruk Kwegondeza made a tactical substitution, introducing Amans Atamba, who restored parity in the 66th minute. The hosts sealed the comeback when Yusuf Lule netted the winner with a neat tap-in in the 78th minute.
“We are happy for the good start. This win gives us motivation going into our next fixtures. I appreciate my players — even when we went behind, they never gave up but fought hard, and this is the result,” said a jubilant Kwegondeza after the match.

IUEA head coach and former Uganda Cranes midfielder Hassan Wasswa Mawanda admitted defeat but promised a stronger comeback. “This was our first game in the competition. We lost concentration after taking the lead and had lapses in defense, but that’s football. We’ll go back, prepare better, and come stronger against Muteesa I Royal University,” said Wasswa.
IUEA cerebrate their goal
Returning to the competition after a two-year suspension, BSU’s Sports Tutor, Arthur Kamugisha, described the comeback as both a learning milestone and a statement of intent.
“We’ve learned a lot during our two-year absence. This victorious return gives us confidence to make a statement in this edition. I thank the administration, technical team, and players for their hard work — we hope for more wins as the campaign progresses,” Kamugisha said.
Action between BSU (yellow) and IUEA
Action in the Pepsi University Football League continues tomorrow as Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) takes on the University of Kisubi (UNIK) in a Group A fixture — a match that will test the hosts’ resolve to bounce back from their previous underwhelming performances in the tournament.
