Police in Rukiga District have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly exhuming his late mother's remains without lawful authority.
The suspect has been identified as Tweyongere Tofiri, a resident of Rutooma Cell, Nyakagabagaba Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county in Rukiga District.
The deceased was identified as Medius Allen Tumushabe, who died in 2011 and was buried at her ancestral home in Rutooma Village, Nyakagabagaba Parish.
According to police, the incident occurred on November 7, 2026, at about 3:00pm, when Tofiri allegedly went to his mother's grave and exhumed her remains without a court order, family consent or authorisation from local authorities.
"The suspect was arrested by community members while in possession of a human skull, causing shock and fear among family members and residents," Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, said in a statement issued on November 8, 2026.
Tumushime said the suspect is being held at Rukiga Central Police Station (CPS) on charges of criminal trespass, exhuming a body and disturbing the peace of the dead, contrary to the Penal Code Act.
"He will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are complete," he added.
