Shock has gripped the country after Kalangala District Woman MP, Hellen Nakimuli, died on Sunday morning while undergoing a surgical procedure.
According to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, he had spoken to Nakimuli at about 9:00 am as she coordinated a planned meeting of opposition Members of Parliament in her capacity as Shadow Minister for Information.
At the time, she was reportedly driving herself to the hospital for what she described as a minor surgery.
"Unfortunately, she has not made it out of theatre. She has died during the procedure. Kitalo nnyo ddala," said Ssenyonyi.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also confirmed the legislator's passing, describing it as a devastating loss to Parliament and the nation.
"Honourable colleagues, it is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of our esteemed colleague, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala and Shadow Minister for Information, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli. Words are insufficient to convey the shock we are experiencing at this moment, and we pray that the Lord Almighty sustains her family, friends, and all of us during this challenging time," said Among.

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, described the news as shocking and heartbreaking.
"Terrible, shocking news! Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, Woman MP, Kalangala District, has just passed on after an unsuccessful surgery. May God strengthen all of us in this very tough time," said Kyagulanyi.

Political Journey and Re-election
Nakimuli, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), was re-elected as Kalangala District Woman MP in the 2021 general elections, riding on the party's growing support across the country.
Her victory reflected strong backing from island communities in Kalangala, where she had built a reputation as a vocal advocate for service delivery and improved livelihoods.
During her tenure, she focused on issues affecting fishing communities, including access to healthcare, education, and transport, as well as the protection of Lake Victoria resources.
Her re-election campaign emphasized accountability, youth empowerment, and amplifying the voices of marginalized island populations.

Role in Parliament
At the time of her death, Nakimuli served as Shadow Minister for Information, a role in which she actively engaged in scrutinizing government communication policies and advocating for media freedom and transparency.
In Parliament, she contributed to debates on public service delivery, particularly highlighting challenges faced by hard-to-reach districts like Kalangala.
She was also part of several opposition mobilization efforts and remained a visible figure in NUP's parliamentary activities. Colleagues describe her as dedicated, approachable, and deeply committed to representing her constituents.
