And When All Fear Is Gone, I Will Be Waiting for You, Chiquitita

By Evan Sande Ndahura

You move through the world like a whispered song—
soft, trembling at the edge of dawn,
hiding your heart in careful shadows
as though love itself might betray you.
Yet every time your eyes wander back to me,
they glow with a truth your lips refuse to speak.

Chiquitita,
you fear the crowds,
the jealous gazes,
the whispers of people who don’t know your soul—
but I do.
I have seen the light you smother
just to keep the world from staring.
I have watched you bury your laughter
so no one hears your heart calling mine.

And still, your actions betray you—
the way you linger,
the way your breath catches,
the way your silence trembles
as if it wants to become a confession
but retreats before crossing your lips.

I have lit a fire for you, my love—
a warmth to chase away the darkness
that makes you doubt your worth.
Not to burn you,
not to expose you,
but to give your shadow a place to rest.
For the eyes you fear
fear you too—
because your own light threatens to outshine them.

Why hide from destiny,
from joy,
from a love that has already chosen you?
Why let the unknown cripple your wings
when they were made to write poems in the sky?
I have given you my sunrise
so you never again mistake yourself for the night.
I have carved you into the thoughts
I carry through every hour.
I have given my all,
even when you believe
my all may somehow fall short.

But hear me now—
with the softness of a vow
and the strength of a promise carved in stone:

When all the fear is gone,
I will be waiting for you,
Chiquitita.

When your courage wakes
and your heart steps out of hiding,
when your hands stop trembling at the thought
of being seen loving me,
when your shadow becomes a companion
instead of a prison—
I will be there.

Not to ask for more,
not to claim what isn’t freely offered,
but to embrace the love
you’ve been trying to protect
instead of express.

The world will always stare—
but let them.
Let them witness the wildfire
you tried to bury.
Let them see how you transform
once you stop silencing the truth
your soul has been singing all along.

And when at last
fear loosens its grip on your heart,
when courage meets desire
and your silence finally becomes a voice—

I will be right where you left me,
waiting,
ready,
yours—
Chiquitita.
